HOST MOTHER REFLECTS ON POSITIVE EXPERIENCE
Submitted By: Susan Mauro, ASSE Host Mother from Laurel, MT, USA

ASSE Exchange Student Martin Lippert came to us here in Laurel, Montana from Germany in September of 2007. To say he has become part of our family would be an understatement.

Martin has impacted our lives in such a huge way. My son Seth is 4 years old. He is visually impaired as well as learning delayed. Martin has taken his new “little brother” under his wing. Seeing Seth and his “big brother” playing, talking and laughing truly brings tears to my eyes. They are both making such positive impacts on each other’s lives and I believe that it will continue for years to come.

Martin’s family in Germany has also become part of our extended family. They are so very thoughtful, sending us amazing chocolate and toys from Germany for a thank you gift and for Christmas. I also make it a habit when Martin speaks to them by videophone to pop my head in to say hello.

I am so very thankful that I made the decision to take an ASSE Exchange Student into our home for the school year and am thrilled I made the right choice in choosing Martin. I urge everyone to consider this program and to bring an exchange student into their lives. We have spoken to Martin’s family and we are planning a trip to Germany to visit him after he goes home. I think Seth would love it when he gets older. I have grown so attached to Martin that I joke that I may not let him go home!

Thanks for letting me share our family’s hosting story.

Sincerely,
Susan Mauro
